Commonwealth Games 2022 India Medal Tally


The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the "Friendly Games", are a quadrennial international multi-sport event between athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Commonwealth Games were first held in 1930, and ran sequentially every four years since 1950, except in 1942 and 1946 (cancelled due to World War II). These games were called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974.

The Games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which regulates the sporting program and selects the host cities. The sports movement includes International Sports Federations (IFs), Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) and organizing committees for each specific Commonwealth Games.

Facts about commonwealth games

  • Athletes with disabilities have been included as full members of their national teams since 2002, making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event.
  • In 2018, the Games became the first global multi-sport event to feature the same number of men's and women's medals, and four years later they are the first global multi-sport event to feature more women than men.
  • Some traditions, such as the Commonwealth Games flag hoisting and the Queen's Baton Relay, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies, are unique to the Games.
  • Although the Commonwealth of Nations has 56 members, there are 72 Commonwealth Games federations.
  • Only six countries have participated in each Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Of these six, Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand have won at least one gold medal in each sport.
  • Australia has been the highest achiever for fourteen editions of the Games, England for seven and Canada for one.
  • Commonwealth Games 2022 is the 22nd Games to be held since 1930, it was held in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
  • The next Commonwealth Games will be the first in history to be held in a decentralized manner, as they are scheduled to be held in four cities in the Australian state of Victoria from 17 to 29 March 2026.

India in the Commonwealth Games 2022

  • India's appearance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games was India's 18th appearance at the Games.
  • Hockey player Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete P.V. Sindhu served as the flag bearer of the country's opening ceremony. Boxer Nikhat Zareen and table tennis player Sharath Achanta served as the flag bearers of the country's closing ceremony.
  • The Indian team of 106 men and 104 women (210 competitors) participating in 16 sports was named in July 2022.
  • India did not compete in 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, netball and rugby sevens.
  • Indian para-athletes participated in athletics, para powerlifting, swimming and table tennis.
  • Squash player Anahata Singh became the youngest Indian athlete to compete in the Commonwealth Games at the age of just 14.
  • 45-year-old Lawn Bowles player Sunil Bahadur was the oldest player in the team.
  • India's first Commonwealth Games medal was won by Sanket Sargar with a silver in weightlifting on 30 July.
  • Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the first gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on 30 July.
  • India won its first medal in lawn bowls, the women's fours team won the gold medal while the men's fours won the silver medal.
  • Sharath Kamal Achanta won four medals (3 Gold and 1 Silver) in Table Tennis at CWG 2022.
  • India won most medals in wrestling game, Gold: 6, Silver: 1, Bronze: 5, total 12 medals.
  • The second sport where India won the most medals after wrestling was Weightlifting, Gold: 3, Silver: 3, Bronze: 4, a total of 10 medals.
